Technical Officer – Fire Resistance

Location: Near Sawston

Hours: Monday to Friday 9am – 5pm, with an hour for lunch

Salary – Negotiable depending on experience

An excellent and varied opportunity has arisen for a Technical Officer to join an established and accredited company based near Sawston. As a Technical Officer, you will be responsible for fire resistance testing on products such as fire doors, partitions and glazing screens.

This is a fantastic opportunity for an individual who is practically and technically minded who is eager to develop their career.

Main duties:

  • Liaising with clients to ensure that their requirements are fully met and all required information and components have been received
  • Conducting tests in accordance with the requirements of the appropriate test standard and approved procedures
  • Measuring and checking the products that are to be tested
  • Assisting with the installation of the product
  • Fitting instrumentation, setting up and operating the test furnaces
  • Making observations and taking measurements and records during and after the fire resistance test.
  • Data processing, AutoCAD technical drawings and preparation of test reports following the requirements of our quality manual and the test standard.
  • Additional tasks as required in support of the operation of the laboratory. These might be in areas such as safety, equipment maintenance, calibration of the laboratory.
  • Must be prepared to take on a variety of roles working in a range of environments as the need arises
  • Working with the rest of the team to ensure that test preparations and testing are completed to specification and on time
  • Involvement in specific projects to cost, organise and complete

Candidate requirements:

  • Ideally a scientific, engineering or construction graduate with some relevant commercial experience.
  • Technically minded with an interest in understanding how things are put together/ work, with practical problem-solving skills
  • Previous experience or knowledge of working to testing standards would be beneficial
  • Hands-on practical ability, with a working understanding of construction materials and their uses
  • Accurate, good written skills and IT skills including Word and Excel
  • Verbal communication skills are essential as well as the ability to build a good working relationship with clients and colleagues.
  • Understanding of 2D technical drawings. Knowledge of AutoCAD would be beneficial.
  • Organised, methodical and versatile individual with excellent attention to detail
  • Willing and enthusiastic to learn quickly
  • Enjoys team working but can operate alone
