ITV – November 2020
We have seen a substantial increase in the number of people looking for flexible and part-time work over the past few weeks. We are not alone in spotting this dramatic shift.
In part, this can be attributed to the government’s extension of the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme through to December 2020 and the announcement of a second lockdown. Many people will be looking to fill the 20% salary gap in the build up to Christmas.
The team at ITV News joined Hayley Murfitt at our offices in Ely to talk about what options are available to job seekers.
Hayley explains to ITV that businesses have not stopped recruiting through this second lockdown, and many companies have moved their recruitment processes online.
“Interviews are now being moved to more of a remote setting. And if you’re not used to that it does take a little bit of an adjustment”.
There are a significant number of benefits to moving your recruitment process online.
Yes, the recruitment market is slightly trickier than normal right now, especially with the new lockdown measures that have been announced.
But the key to securing work right now is positivity and perseverance.
And whilst the usual Christmas temp roles in the Hospitality, Accommodation and Retail may not appear in the same volume as previous years many businesses are still recruiting:
- Royal Mail is looking to fill a record number of temporary season jobs due to a surge in online shopping during the pandemic. They aim to hire 33,000 additional workers for the Christmas period – two thirds more than usual.
- Tesco is recruiting 11,000 temporary workers for their stores and warehouses.
- Amazon is recruiting 20,000 seasonal roles ahead of Christmas.
- Boots are currently recruiting for their seasonal colleagues. They have a number of shift patterns available across the country to suit everyone’s needs.
These are not the only businesses looking for temporary workers in the run up to Christmas. There are more out there. Check Reed, CV Library, Total Jobs, Indeed and the Neaves & Neat website for a variety of different temporary roles.
