19 Dec Our 2017 Christmas Charities: Beads of Courage Programme
Beads of Courage UK are an inspirational charity that gives support and strength to children and families coping with serious illnesses such as those who suffer from burn injuries, chronic illnesses, neonatal ICU families, cardiac conditions and cancer and blood donations.
Upon enrolment, each child is given the Beads of Courage bead colour guide with a detachable membership card. Their Beads of Courage journey begins when a length of string and beads spelling out their name is given. Afterwards, colourful beads are given to the child by professional healthcare workers each representing a medical milestone to add to their Beads of Courage collection.
The programme provides something tangible the child can use to narrate their experiences whilst undergoing intensive treatment. The concept behind the beads, has been proven to decrease illness-related distress, increase the use of positive coping strategies, helps the children find meaning in their illness and restores a sense of self whilst coping with the serious illness. Furthermore, the beads allow children to bond with others who are also experiencing these treatments. Therefore, the meaning of the beads creates not only courage, but a shared level of support between parents, the children and their healthcare
Mags Hirst, the Community Nursing Team’s Play Specialist and Beads of Courage Champion, kindly came to meet the team at Neaves & Neat to introduce them to the programme. She illustrated stories which were both heart-breaking, heart-warming and unveiled the impact and benefits that a small bead brought or could bring, to suffering children and their families.
The team at Neaves & Neat have donated £500 towards the Beads of Courage Programme.
“On behalf of the CCCN Team and the children we care for, I would like to say a huge thank you for your £500 donation which we were thrilled to receive for our Programme. This donation will enable the Programme to continue to support children who have long-term, complex health needs by providing them with beads which demonstrate their courageous journey throughout treatment. We are currently supporting thirty children locally which is all thanks to wonderful fund-raisers!” – Mags Hirst
